Fundamentals Class
The Fundamentals Class is to prepare a student to learn specific techniques (the “plays”), how to operate at Master Battle safely, and how to be a good partner for other students. In short, students will acquire the basic skills and understanding of class protocol to participate in complex drills.
The Fundamentals Class cycles through material on a four month basis and meets on Sunday afternoons.
Students may start at any time and when they've completed a cycle they will be ready to be assessed for an invitation to the Advanced Techniques Class.
Curriculum
In the Fundamentals Class, students will learn:
Basic Concepts of Fiore's Armizare ("Art of Arms")
Examples: footwork, sword and dagger cuts and thrusts, sword and dagger guards, grappling guards
Basic Martial Arts Skills and Safety
Examples: safe falling, basic throws, basic wrestling grips, unarmed strikes and covers, safe drilling and being a good partner, recognizing fatigue
Techniques and Drills
Examples: covering hand-to-hand strikes and moving to grips, dagger master covers and disarms, one-handed sword flow drills, cutting into the cross at intentional distances, "remedies" or ways to counter an attack
Graduation
In order to be invited to the Advanced Techniques class, students will need to:
Attend at least one complete Fundamentals Class cycle with a minimum of 75% attendance
Successfully complete assessments conducted by your instructors on your knowledge and execution of the material in the curriculum
Students will leave the course cleared to spar with dagger and boffer (foam practice sword), and be working towards clearance with steel weapons.
